Why is my car stereo whining?

I recently installed a new stereo in my car, but it whines louder as the revs increase. Could this be related to the voltage regulator? When I try to use the convertible, the voltage drops pretty low, so I’m not sure if that could be causing it. At first, I thought it was my motor because the sound is pretty loud. I know it’s definitely the stereo because the noise stops completely when I pull the fuse. Does anyone know what I should replace or test? Also, will this damage the stereo? My car is a '95 Mustang GT.

It sounds like a weak ground. Try using a different spot or strip the paint off for a better connection.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but are you talking about the ground for the stereo, or a ground under the hood? I know the grounds are bad on these cars by default. Thanks for the help!

@Drew
My bad, I assumed there was an amp involved. I’ve never heard of a deck causing this noise on its own. But yeah, check the ground for the stereo itself.

Alright, thanks a lot! It actually went away on its own after I restarted the car. Pretty weird, lol.

Also, this won’t damage the stereo, right?

What you’re hearing is called alternator whine. It can be tough to fix. Make sure your ground is solid and try to keep your RCA cables away from the amp power cable.

I don’t have an amp—I bypassed it. The grounds are brand new, so I’ll clean them up. It actually went away on its own, lol. Thanks a lot!
