What size speakers should I get for my 2001 Ford Mustang?

I’m working on upgrading my 2001 Ford Mustang’s audio system. Currently, I have a Sony XAV AX4000 head unit and a 4-channel Hifonics Zeus amp (150w at 4 ohms or 300w at 2 ohms). Right now, I’m focusing on the front speakers. I know I need components, but the sizes available are either 6x9 or 6.5, while my stock speakers are 6x8. Should I stick with 6x8 components or switch to 6.5s? I’m looking to keep the cost under $200. I want clear sound with a bit of bass, and I’d like to adjust the tweeters’ gain if possible.

If you want to keep the factory speaker location, 6.5-inch component speakers will work pretty well.

You could just get 6x8 speakers and separate tweeters, or pick the size you need for the tweeters.

Infinity Reference series speakers are a solid choice. Going with 6.5-inch speakers will give you a clearer sound, as 6x9s can mess with bass response a bit. 6x9s and 6x8s are basically the same size, but I’d say 6.5s are better for the clarity. Pioneer makes some good direct-fit speakers, though they can sound a little tinny to me.

What about Rockford Punch? I don’t know much about them but was thinking about trying them.

Rockford Fosgate is great for subs and amps, but Alpine used to be the perfect match for those. I switched to Infinity because I’ve got a lot of 6x9s and 6.5-inch speakers in the front, and I don’t need a sub in my setup (I’m running a dual 10.1" screen).

Check Crutchfield. Enter your car model, and it’ll show you speakers that fit. For your car, it seems like 6x8" speakers will give you the most bass displacement. You could also go smaller with 5x7" or 5.25". A 6.5" speaker won’t work because your speaker hole is only 6" high. You’ll want component speakers in the front to replace the tweeters in the sail panels, but you can use coaxial speakers in the back to save some money. Here’s a good setup for under $200:

Front: Kicker 46CSS684 (Component)
Back: Kicker 46CSC684 (Coaxial)

Just be careful with the amp; it might overpower the speakers and blow them if you’re not careful.
