There are three major manufacturers that make kits: American International, Metra, and Scosche. Each of them has their own unique way of making them.

I’m having the same problem with my Saab 9-3 2nd gen. I have a Sony XAV-AX6050, which came with a frame but doesn’t fit right. The plastic frame doesn’t fit the original metal case, and the original outer plastic is too small for the new metal case.
