I have a big 3/4-inch box ready for a 30-pound sub. Does the fact that it’s moving matter?
Yes they can slide in that case
Just put velcro or a piece of carpet on the bottom?
How important is life to you and the people in your car?
Are you sure that you could catch that box easily and without getting hurt if it were thrown at you at, say, 40 miles per hour?
In a crash, that box turns into a bullet that will go through your seat frame and hit you or anyone else in its way.
Yes, this is true. At 45 mph, I hit a civic head-on in my 240sx. My box with two Memphis 12’s would have completely destroyed anyone in the back seat; the fact that the back seat slowed it down is what “only” knocked me out and not worse. From that point on, it was just a rocket with corners.
It has Velcro on it. I was happy with how stable it was until I read this post. I think I’ll get some L frames.
I put a lock strap over the box and pulled it tight, which isn’t the normal way to use the trunk, but it’s not moving.
Velcro won’t keep a 50-pound box and sub from flying forward if something goes wrong.
So you put a carpet under yourself to protect yourself in case of a crash? You can either nail it down or make your back seats stronger so that it doesn’t go through them or anything in front of you, like the front window.
In a famous case, one guy in a car who wasn’t wearing his seatbelt caused all four people in the car to get hurt or die. There shouldn’t be anything in your car that could hurt you if someone hit the back of your head with it really hard.
That didn’t work; it still slid around. Though you may be very careful when turning it, it won’t stay in place unless something is holding it down. I got tired of my subs moving around and ripping wires out of the amp and box, so I screwed the box down with a bent piece of metal. I don’t care as much about this crap anymore because I’ve had it for almost 15 years. My next build will be much better.
I used 12 wood screws and two L-shaped frames that are 1 1/2" long. The box is almost 300 pounds. So far, so good. It’s also in my trunk, which is good.
