What amp should I get for dual voice coil 2 ohm subs? Any suggestions?

Hey guys, I’m looking to buy an amp as a gift for someone with dual voice coil 2 ohm subwoofers. What ohm amp should I be looking for? I’m hoping for some advice on what would work best with these subs. Thanks for any help!

You’ll want an amp that can provide RMS power roughly equal to the sub’s RMS power handling, either at 1 ohm or 4 ohms.

So, a 2 ohm monoblock amp for 2 ohm subs wouldn’t work, right?

@Sutton
Correct. You mentioned a 2 ohm DVC sub, which will be either 1 ohm or 4 ohms, depending on how you wire it.

I’ll be running two 2 ohm DVC subs. Thanks for the info! I’ll search for something that fits.

Oh, okay! If you’re buying an amp for someone with 2 DVC 2 ohm subs, then yes, what you said is correct. Sorry for the confusion earlier!

I’m buying the amp as a gift for someone with 2 DVC 2 ohm subs. Didn’t mean to confuse you, that was unintentional.

Two 2 ohm DVC subs wired in parallel will give you a 0.5 ohm load. If they are wired separately, you’ll get 1 ohm each. I wouldn’t go below 1 ohm for reliability, so you’ll need a 2-channel amp that can handle 1 ohm with the right power (RMS). I can’t recommend anything without knowing the exact subwoofer model. Be careful, though – there’s a lot of false advertising with power ratings. Stay away from brands like Boss and Blaupunkt.
