I just installed two 8-inch subs in my truck. They worked perfectly for about 3 or 4 days, but now they’ve gone completely silent. I’ve checked the wiring, and it’s fine. The amp is getting power and putting out 12 volts. All the connections look good, but there’s no audio at all.
It’s possible they’re blown, but I’m not even getting any rattling or distorted sound from them. The boxes are inverted and fully sealed, so I can’t do the push test.
If they are blown, does anyone have good recommendations for a slim 8-inch sub? I’ve got a single cab truck with two skinny boxes and a 500-watt Pioneer amp. Thanks in advance!
Have you double-checked every connection? RCAs, remote wire, power, and ground? Did you check for blown fuses? Make sure you go through everything before deciding to replace the subs. It could save you money. Also, if you had a shop install it, you might still have a warranty.
@Adi
I wired everything myself, so no shop warranty here… just the joys of buying used stuff on Marketplace. The amp is working fine, RCA cables are run away from the power wire, and the amp’s signal light turns on as it should. I checked the 30A fuse in the amp, and it’s intact. I might try rewiring the subs since I reused some old wires from another vehicle. Is there a way to visually inspect the subs by opening the box?
@Ren
You’ll need to unscrew the subs and take them out. Once they’re out, you can test the resistance on the subs with a multimeter. Also, double-check the fuses while you’re at it. Sometimes they can look fine but still be bad.
@Adi
I’ll have to figure out how to unscrew them since the boxes are sealed tight except for the connection points. If I test the resistance, is it fixable if it’s off? I know if it reads OL it’s blown, but what if it shows a short (0 ohms)? Can that be repaired?
@Ren
If the subs are 2 ohms or 4 ohms, they should read close to those numbers. A blown fuse will show high resistance or no reading at all, while a good fuse will have low resistance or a beep on your multimeter. Unfortunately, if the sub is shorted, it’s probably not repairable.
