28 Hz box or 30.5 Hz box… Which one should I pick?

Hey everyone,

I’m about to build a new box and was wondering whether I should go with a 28 Hz or a 30.5 Hz box. I’ll only be pushing 1000 RMS with the stock alternator, which is 150 amps. This is a budget build for a 15" ported box. Any thoughts or advice before I start?

It depends on your preference. If you want a lower tuning, that’s fine, but you might lose some response in the mid 40s to high 30s.

I was thinking about going lower to get more rattle. I’ve been running 35 Hz, but it’s just not enough low end. I’m wondering if it’s because I’m using a small, sealed 15" box (2.03 cu ft). Not sure though.

You’re not going to get much low-end bass from a small sealed box. Rockville’s not known for top-tier quality, and 28 Hz might be too low for that setup. I’d recommend going with a properly tuned ported box around 32 Hz to get more low end.

@Wolf
I’ve got a ported box tuned to 30 Hz, and it hits down to 24 Hz with my single 12". So, a ported box will definitely give you more depth.

What sub are you using?

I’m running a Rockville K9. I need to find one that’s rated for 4 ohms to match up with my 2500-watt Planet Audio amp.
